Abstract

The growing number of converts to Islam in Indonesia reflects complex dynamics of religious identity, particularly within a multi-ethnic society. Religious conversion is not merely a theological transition but also involves identity negotiation, social acceptance, and the need for sustained guidance. In this context, adaptive dakwah organizations play a crucial role in ensuring that the internalization of Islamic teachings occurs inclusively. This study aims to analyze the strategies of multi-ethnic dakwah management implemented by Mualaf Center Indonesia (MCI) and the Indonesian Chinese Muslim Association (PITI), as well as their contributions to shaping the Islamic identity of converts. Analysis using Munir’s Dakwah Management Theory shows that MCI applies a modern, structured, and universal-oriented management model through spiritual guidance, psychosocial support, and economic empowerment. Meanwhile, PITI develops an ethnically based dakwah strategy for Chinese Muslims by integrating cultural elements, using local symbols and language, and strengthening community networks. From the perspective of Tajfel and Turner’s Social Identity Theory, the findings reveal that the success of convert mentoring is largely influenced by the organization’s ability to provide an accepting, secure, and ethnically compatible ingroup. Thus, this study highlights that multi-ethnic dakwah management must not only organize programs but also address the social identity dynamics experienced by converts. The findings contribute theoretically to the development of multi-ethnic dakwah management studies and offer a strategic model relevant for dakwah organizations in plural societies.
